Hi, this is my latest piece of work on the Game of Thrones location theme. It took me a couple of attempts to find the right conditions. The location is Foley Bridge in Tullymore Forest Park, Co Down. In Game of Thrones they shot it as a winter location in the middle of summer, so there was a ton of fake snow added (pity the poor sod who had to clean it up afterwards!)
This evening reminded me much more of the Shire in Lord of the Rings or Legend an early film by one of my heros Sir Ridley Scott. C.S Lewis's The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe was also inspired by Tollymore Forest Park and the Mournes.
I could definitely imagine a mythical creature appearing from that light under the bridge. Timing is everything when you arrive at a location like this. I took two visits to the location this week to search for find the right conditions. I was looking for a very small window of time where the angle of the sun projected light through the trees and filtered that dappled sunlight under the bridge. I reckon I missed this on my first attempt but about 45 mins.
On my second visit the light was mesmerizing but I had to be patient as there was a fair bit of cloud that particular evening and I was shooting some long shutter speeds so quite often I would have to scrap the shot halfway through as the light came and went under cloud cover while at the same time conscious that my window for the fractrured light was closing.
The irony in capturing something so brief is that it took me the best part of 10 hours to find the location, work out my shot and capture it and that’s before I started to process the image. I love this process though, its like a chase or a dance with nature!
